The Great Gig in the Sky (1957-2013)

The last post was 08 April 2011 to wish Paddy a memorable birthday... with sadness this is to commemorate Paddy's Great Gig in the Sky.

Paddy and I go back a long, long winding road to circa early 1960's when music forged a life-long bond.  He lived around the corner and jammin' was our mission and rock 'n roll our game.

Our debut was circa 1965 in the middle school with james timms and linda khambata and then with neville who made sure the beat played on.

I still remember the gig we played at Paddy's dad's company - yellow turtlenecks, bell-bottom striped pants, long hair, and delivering the beatles, ventures, seekers, rolling stones to a corporate crowd!

Paddy wouldn't look kindly on commiserating - no, he'd want a big bad celebration marking the good times.

Post your warm memories in the comments.

Peace.

  1. Such sad news.

Padman will always remain in my memory as this chirpy young boy in school and more recently for his big laugh and love for life.....

At least some of us were able to share some happy moments with him, for the last time a few weeks ago, when he pushed himself to come home for lunch.

May his soul rest in peace.

  2. Will always remember Padman the way that we all knew him in school -- the life and soul of the party, brimming with confidence, a great friend to all of us and always there for us. To me, he embodied our high school years -- so full of life, so confident of our futures, so sure that everything would always work out for us. They were special times, and they will always be irrevocably tied up with his image.

  3. And I am not frightened of dying,
any time will do, I don't mind.
Why should I be frightened of dying?
    There's no reason for it,
    you've gotta go sometime."
I never said I was frightened of dying.

  4. I first got to know Puddy in 1965 in standard three in the boys schoool, he was a marvellous young cricketer and I fondly remember him bowling over after over with his metronomic action for Wilson in inter-house cricket in 1970 and taking heaps of wickets! He was always a talented person and always prepared to put in the hard yards at whatever he did. I remember , too, that he was one of Mr. Lewis' favourites in the class of 1973, not because he was a Wilsonite but because of his sheer infectious enthusiasm in all he did. He had a fun-loving, friendly personality and I was never surprised that he was so successful professionally, good bright people seldom fail to leave their mark. I have many other memories of Padman; all heartwarming, but to write them here is going to take a long time. He was a rare person, gifted, funny and generous in spirit and most importantly for me....he spoke his mind. My deepest condolences to his family ...may he rest in peace. Behram.

  5. Rajeev and Puddy's first gig was in the middle school in 1967 with Linda singing the Seeker's WORLD OF OUR OWN ...I remember it clearly...Freaky on electric and Puddy on accoustic (or was it vice-versa!) at age ten! Those were the days!!! In 1965 as Rajeev wrote in his warm tribute we were all in the Boys school, Padman in Miss Deutre's/ Miss Jayakar's (my) class on the first floor and Rajeev next door in 3B..... Behram.

  7. Rajeev, very touching obituary. It opened the flood gates of memories I had thought were long lost. Thanks Behram for reminding me especially of Linda's rendering of "World of our Own". I am sure it was Rajeev on his spanking new white electric guitar - I remember thinking at the time that it was pretty cool.

Back to Puddy. It's a sad day when we lose an old friend, especially one so young and effervescent (I like to think of us all as 55/56 years young).

Unfortunately, on account of living so far away from Mumbai, I could not meet Puddy or any of you at the various reunions. I do hope to catch up with some of you in the near future.

    Sincere condolences to Padman's family.

  9. I have fond memories of Paddy as a great musician and guy. Ranjit Shah and me stayed in his house in Trivandrum for couple of days in 1975. We listen to the album Passion Play by Jethro Tull and also listened to his music. Sincere condolences to Padman's family and may is soul rest in peace.
